Understanding Self and Society Unit

Out of Class, Single Text Essay

Over the last few weeks, we have studied two texts whose authors are beginning to recognize their own identity. As we have discussed, these personal journeys do not occur in isolation; each author had interactions with outside forces that helped them define who they are. As a result of negative events in their lives, these authors were able to strengthen their own resolve and identity.

In a well-written and clearly organized essay, please examine how Angelou or Douglass was able to recover from a negative experience, analyzing both external and internal actions and reactions.

The paper is due on ______________ for Section 1 and ______________ for Section 2.  This paper must be typed and follow M.L.A. formatting. This means Times New Roman font, 12 point size, and double spaced. The heading should be:

Your name

Ms. Barbour
