-gives background information - explains what happened in the story just before the quote appears Use -write down the quote -include a quote transition (this is something like Shakespeare writes that….) Define -explain what it means on the explicit level -keep it simple -translation/what is it saying Analyze -relate to topic sentence/thesis/point -analyze use -implicit level
